2010 Summer Art Camp
Dates vary per age group

Frist Center Summer Art Camp!

Do you have a budding artist in your family? The Frist Center’s summer camp can help your child find his or her artistic voice. Our weeklong, age-appropriate classes are designed to encourage artistic expression, art appreciation, interpretation, and imagination in kids ages 5 to 13. This year we are also offering a special two-day summer camp for teens ages 14 to 18 during which they will learn how to blow glass with an experienced glass artist. All sessions are directly supervised by one of our experienced museum educators. No previous art experience is necessary for any of the summer camps!

Program Descriptions

Ages 5–7

In the ARTic!
Travel to the coolest place on earth! Young artists will explore a variety of creative techniques while learning about the art, myths, and animals found in the natural world of the Arctic.

Becoming an Artist
Children will develop their creativity and explore their imaginations as they learn about a selection of great artists from the past few centuries. Whether engaging in action painting like Jackson Pollack or creating glass-like sculptures in the style of Dale Chihuly, campers are sure to find their own artistic voices while learning about different art-making techniques.

Adventures in the Wild
Little artists will journey to the jungle, desert, ocean, and beyond while exploring the ways professional artists have related to and portrayed animals in their diverse habitats. Using a variety of 2-D and 3-D art mediums campers will then create their own works based on animals and their environments.

Smashin’ Fashion
Drawing on the Frist Center’s The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947–1957 exhibition, children's literature, and their own imaginations, campers will explore the creation of clothing from the basics of weaving to the design of couture. During the process, participants will also enjoy learning a bit of French.

Ages 8–10

Collage of Cultures
Campers will explore the traditions and artistry of different cultures from all over the world as they “travel” to different countries and create projects based on what they learn. Techniques in painting, sculpture, wearable art, and mixed media will be incorporated. Pack your passport and your creativity for this camp!

Mimicking Glass
Drawing inspiration from sunlit gardens, clear blue waters and Dale Chihuly’s glass exhibition at the Frist Center, children will create a variety of colorful and dazzling projects using art techniques to simulate the look of glass.

Uniquely You
Campers will combine both traditional and contemporary studio techniques to create works that are all about themselves. Classes will explore how to communicate each child’s individuality through a variety of media including paint, dye, textiles, collage, photography, and more.

My World in 2-D
Utilizing a variety of 2-D art mediums campers will create artworks inspired by the world around them. Pastels, acrylic paints, watercolors, screen printing and more will be explored, which will give participants a better understanding of the diverse selections 2-D art has to offer.

Ages 11–13

Photography: New vs. Old
There is a battle in the world of photography: the digital approach is overtaking the traditional method, but the original ways of making photographic images are still used in the art world. Drawing on Tokihiro Sato’s exhibition at the Frist Center and his use of traditional photographic techniques as their muse, participants will learn about the history of photography while exploring some old ways of creating photographic images alongside their newer, digital counterparts. All materials, including cameras, will be provided.

Ages 14–18

Glass Blowing
Explore the ancient art of glass blowing! Teens will learn the fundamentals of working with hot glass in this fun and challenging camp. Appropriate glass-working tools and methods will be demonstrated by an experienced glass artist and then used by students. Emphasis will be on safety and good work habits.
